Bottomless Pits Come Back

My Bottomless Pits are back, as I try to nest columns in order to have a column's background image tile to the bottom of columns one and three, when they don't otherwise have content.

MstrBob and Eddie of the WebDeveloper Forums helped me work on this, but then I decided I want to try putting links in column three, and also, have an image there, but not the leaves this time; this time, I want a dark border, to help contain the page visually.

In Thirty-Nine Steps - er, Trials, I only succeeded briefly in dragging the navigation, that is, the vertical collection of links, up from the depths of my now-familiar well, or, bottomless pit. However, the rest of the layout on that version is pretty bad. See #121, to see what I mean.

I present just a few for your amusement.

Of course, if you can discover what my error is, I'd be delighted to have your help.

Just one error?

It looks to me as though I am always making the same error, despite the changes I've been making to my external style sheets. I just don't know what that error is. Other than the one error that causes the bottomless pits, these pages are clean; they all validate without any evidence of errors.

I have put background colors on the divs (divisions) again, so you (and I) can see what the logical structure is.

Without further ado, here goes.

Test #106

Here, I got all the stuff on the page, but it's all too big and too wide.

Test #121

Here, I managed to drag the vertical navigation out of the pit, but column two, with the content, is shoved to the left so far that it covers up the leaves in column one. If you scroll down near the bottom of the page, you can see just a trace of the leaves peeking out from under column two.

.

Test #123

In this version, I managed to uncover the leaves, putting column two more nearly where it belongs. Of course, then the vertical navigation in column three is once again displaced down below everything else. But new! So are the validation images! They seem to have fallout out of column two. I haven't been able to discover why.

Test #139

Sparing you many variations, we come to the last one. It is last because I got tired. All the elements I want on the page are showing, and if I could just slip that vertical navigation back up where it belongs, alongside the main content in column two, seems to me things would go right.

Summary

I haven't figured this out yet.

Duhhhh.
