Return to Kumbi's chart, 10 May 2010
Kumbi's geriatric blood panel of 23 March 2010 showed some elevated values in his liver. Dr. JH put him on liver support medications, including Hepato Liquid, and Chinese herbs. I began feeding these the evening of 1 April 2010, and, as instructed, monitored Kumbi's glucose levels, as shown in previous pages here.
We ended up keeping Kumbi on the same dose of Novolin-NPH insulin he had been on since 18 Janurary 2010.
About the middle of April - I mentioned it in a note - Kumbi seemed, fairly suddenly, to begin to feel better. He was livelier, barked more easily, coughed less, and played more than he'd been doing before.
As I write this, on 26 April 2010, I believe it's likely the liver support meds that are helping Kumbi feel better. Well, I can't omit the FOURTH course of Clavaseptin he's on for infection; maybe we're gaining on the infection.
Poor Kumbi! More pricks! But I'd noticed things changing, doing occasional mid-afternoon glucose tests, and wanted to know how the REST of the day was looking. Good boy, Kumbi; sorry to do this to you Yet Again - but I rather like the results! EXCEPT for that soaring of glucose levels in the evening!
Now I really want to try to find out what is causing that soaring; it seems to be characteristic, for now, since Kumbi began with the liver support meds. I don't know why that soaring is occurring. It has the appearance of rebound, but my vets say, no; that's not it.
I'll be investigating further. So will my vets. We are initiating testing for Cushings.
I tested again at 21:02 Poor Kumbi! As always, he was a very good sport about it. His glucose reading was 27.3 mmol/L, which is 492 mg/dL. I won't test him again tonight; he's had more than enough! Also, this appears now to be a characteristic soaring - and I truat that coming down must also be characteristic.
Adding to the chart, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 - I just HAD to add that last reading to the chart, so I've revised it. It comes a bit close to falling off the edge, but just manages to stay in the picture. You need to sort out that last reading from the scale that shows md/dL (milligrams per deciLiter); sorry! I did make the added reading approximately to scale, and included the time of the reading as well.
Updates will follow - somewhere!
